Is HiBob a Zipwire Competitor? An Honest Comparison

We get asked this often enough that it's worth answering properly: "Isn't Zipwire just HiBob for contractors?" If you want the one-line version: Zipwire is almost HiBob for agencies and companies running contractors - but only almost, and where that "almost" breaks down is the interesting part, because there is genuine overlap in a couple of places, and pretending otherwise wouldn't help anyone doing due diligence.
HiBob is a well-regarded HCM (Human Capital Management) platform, and its 2025-2026 Sapient Insights rankings (#1 in Core HRMS, Performance Management, and HR Service Delivery for its market segment) aren't nothing. It's a serious tool. But it's built for a different job than Zipwire is, and understanding where the two products actually compete—versus where one of them simply doesn't have a dog in the fight—matters if you're choosing between them, or wondering whether you need both.
What HiBob actually is
HiBob ("Bob") is a full-suite HCM: core HR records and org charts, time and attendance, native payroll in the US and UK plus a "Payroll Hub" that hands off to local partners elsewhere, performance reviews (self, peer, manager, upward), compensation management with salary bands and pay-equity dashboards, and—since 2024—an integrated applicant tracking system called Bob Hiring. It's a single system of record intended to cover the entire employee lifecycle, from job posting through to exit interview.
That's a lot of surface area, and most of it has no Zipwire equivalent at all. Zipwire doesn't do performance reviews, compensation bands, or recruiting. If you're comparing the two products feature-for-feature across the whole HCM stack, HiBob wins by default in about seven categories, because Zipwire isn't trying to compete there.
The overlap is narrower, and it sits in exactly the two places where document handling meets compliance: onboarding document collection, and e-signature.
Where the platforms genuinely overlap
HiBob's onboarding tooling lets you set up preboarding workflows, upload documents for a new hire to complete, and run staged checklists across preboarding, day one, and first week. The compliance check that comes up for almost every new joiner is Right to Work: confirming someone is legally allowed to work in the country before they start. HiBob's workflow can flag a manager if a candidate has "any right to work restrictions or flags on their references"—but the actual verification typically comes from a third-party integration (Zinc is one HiBob names directly), pushed into HiBob rather than run natively inside it.
This is Zipwire Collect's entire reason for existing: packs and conditional logic, nested document requirements, and a Machine Vision layer that identifies document type and extracts fields (names, expiry dates, ID numbers) natively, without a bolt-on integration. If the conditional logic can handle Right to Rent out of the box, Right to Work is the easy case.
HiBob also has an eSign feature. It's worth reading HiBob's own terms carefully here, because they're unusually direct about its limits: the eSign feature is "valid under eIDAS regulation but is not a digital signature service—it is only a way to indicate consent, approval, or acknowledgment," and HiBob's own T&Cs state it "may not be legally enforceable in certain jurisdictions," advising customers to assess enforceability themselves. That's a fair and honest disclosure on HiBob's part, and it tells you what the feature is actually for: internal acknowledgments and policy sign-off, not disputed contracts.
Zipwire's Signable Documents solve a different problem: both signers walk away with independent, cryptographic proof of exactly what was signed—a Merkle tree built one leaf per paragraph, attested on-chain, verifiable without ever contacting Zipwire again. Where HiBob's eSign is explicitly a convenience acknowledgment feature, Zipwire's is built for the moment a signature actually gets disputed years later, when you don't want your proof to depend on a vendor's servers and goodwill still being around. It's also not a one-off feature bolted on for contracts: the same attestation machinery backs more than a dozen distinct on-chain attestation types under the hood—identity, age gates, AML status, delegation—so a signed document, an age check, and an AML clearance all produce the same kind of independently verifiable proof, rather than each being a different vendor integration. The deeper difference: what is the record actually built around?
The table makes the surface differences clear, but the underlying architectural choice is more interesting than any single feature comparison. HiBob's data model has one entity at its centre: the employee record. Everything—performance, compensation, time off, org chart—hangs off that record. Contractors are supported, but as a variant of the same employee-shaped object, and the actual compliant onboarding, payment, and cross-border management of contractors is handed off to a partner integration (Remote is the one HiBob names) rather than modelled natively.
Zipwire's data model has a different centre of gravity: the assignment. A sender is assigned to a client, on a rate plan, under a billing plan, tracked through a journal, submitted as a timesheet, approved, and invoiced. There's no employee record underneath any of this, because there doesn't need to be one—the whole model assumes variable, multi-client, contractor-shaped work from the ground up, not an employee shape with contractor exceptions bolted on.
Who actually runs that workflow is deliberately flexible. The role chain is always sender → approver → processor, but the workplace itself can be set up and managed either by the agency's client directly, or by the agency sitting between the contractor and the client - Zipwire doesn't assume a staffing agency has to be in the loop at all. In practice it's the approver or the processor who creates the workplace and invites the other parties into the assignment, whichever of the two is doing the work of running things: a processor is as likely to be a staffing agency's ops team as it is a solo founder who's hired a couple of freelancers directly. It's also entirely possible for the client to be the one who owns the workplace and invites the agency in purely as the processor - see Letting the Client Own the Workplace for that arrangement. HiBob has no equivalent to any of this, because it has no concept of a workplace that sits between two other companies in the first place.
This is why "add contractor support to HiBob" and "use Zipwire" aren't really solving the same problem, even in the one area (onboarding/compliance) where the two products' feature lists genuinely overlap. HiBob's contractor handling is real, but it's mediated through a second vendor. Zipwire's is the whole product.
Where HiBob has the stronger answer
Single system of record for the full employee lifecycle. If you're running a permanent workforce and need performance reviews, compensation bands, recruiting, and payroll all in one place with data flowing cleanly between them, that's a genuinely hard problem HiBob has solved well, and it's not a problem Zipwire is trying to solve at all.
Native payroll in major markets. Running actual payroll—withholding calculations, tax filing, W-2/1099 generation—inside the same platform that holds the HR data is a real convenience for US/UK-based teams. Zipwire deliberately stays out of payroll; it produces the verifiable timesheet and invoicing data your payroll or AP system consumes, but it isn't one.
Integration breadth for traditional, human-configured tooling. A public API and a 3,000+ app marketplace (Make, Workato, and direct partners) is a mature, well-trodden way to wire HiBob into an existing software estate. If what you need is a point-and-click integration into some other SaaS product your ops team already runs, that ecosystem is bigger and more battle-tested than anything Zipwire currently offers. Zipwire's own REST API runs the whole platform under the hood - it's what the web app, the CLI, and the MCP server all talk to - but it isn't published or documented for third parties to build against directly, the way HiBob's is. If you need a documented, general-purpose API to integrate against rather than the MCP surface Zipwire does publish, that's a real gap today, not a design choice worth pretending is a feature.
Where Zipwire has the stronger answer
Native identity and document verification, and it scales up to genuinely hard cases. HiBob's Right to Work and identity checks come from third-party integrations pushed into the platform. Zipwire's Machine Vision and Yoti-powered checks are built in, and Right to Work - the check almost every employer needs - is the straightforward end of what that engine can do. The proof it's more than a checkbox feature is Right to Rent: UK letting law is a materially harder compliance problem than Right to Work, with citizenship-based routing, name-change evidence chains, and time-limited-permission scenarios all interacting, and Zipwire ships it as a built-in template with the entire decision tree pre-solved, not something you configure integration-by-integration.
Not just documents - forms too, and a route that skips the document entirely. Zipwire Collect isn't limited to uploaded files. The same pack can mix in manual-entry items alongside documents: a URL, a free-text comment, a confirmation checkbox, a code, identifying details (name, date and place of birth, nationality), residential address history, employment reference history, an emergency contact, or a plain yes/no gate that drives the conditional logic - so one request can cover "upload your passport" and "give us your last three addresses" in the same flow, without switching tools. And for checks that reduce to a single fact - are you over 18, are you a real person, do you have a clear AML record - a respondent can connect a wallet as part of completing the collection and claim the relevant attestation directly to it, instead of handing over another document. Once claimed, that attestation lives in the respondent's own wallet and can be presented again elsewhere without repeating the check. HiBob's onboarding forms have no equivalent to a reusable, wallet-held proof - every new requester starts the check from zero.
Journalling and sheeting are deliberately two different things. Most time-tracking tools conflate "what did you actually do" with "what goes on the document your client sees" into one form and one record. Zipwire keeps them separate: the journal is where a contractor privately records their day-to-day work, in whatever detail they want, well before a client ever sees anything; the timesheet ("sheet") is a presentation generated from that journal data according to whatever billing rules apply, and it's what actually gets sent, approved, and invoiced. Two features build directly on that separation, and they compound: Skills Extraction automatically tags skills out of the journal's raw activity data for workforce analytics, with no separate skills form for anyone to fill in, and Verifiable Timesheets attach the same Merkle-tree, on-chain-attested proof used elsewhere in Zipwire to the sheet that comes out the other end. Put those two together and a skills claim stops being self-reported: because the sheet it's drawn from is witnessed and attested, not just typed in and trusted, a contractor can point to independently verifiable proof that they actually did the work behind a given skill, and a client can point to the same witnessed sheet to prove what was approved, without re-litigating the underlying journal. HiBob's time and attendance module has no equivalent distinction: clock-in data goes straight toward payroll, with no separate private-tracking layer underneath it to extract anything from, witnessed or otherwise.
Cryptographically provable signatures, not an acknowledgment feature. This is the sharpest contrast on the list. HiBob's own contract terms state its eSign feature "may not be legally enforceable in certain jurisdictions"—a reasonable disclosure for what is explicitly a consent-indication tool, not a signature service. Zipwire's Signable Documents are built for the opposite scenario: a dispute years later, where you need proof that doesn't depend on Zipwire's servers, or Zipwire the company, still being around to vouch for it.
An agency/contractor-native data model. Rate plans, billing plans, and assignments aren't features grafted onto an employee-shaped core—they're what the core is built from. If your business is running contractors for clients rather than employing people directly, that's the shape of problem Zipwire was built to solve, and it's the shape of problem HiBob hands off to a partner.
Invoices that land directly in the books you already use. Zipwire doesn't ask you to adopt a new accounting system or route everything through an iPaaS connector: it has native adapters into FreeAgent, Xero, QuickBooks Online, and Zoho, so an approved timesheet becomes an invoice inside the accounting software your finance team already runs, with exchange-rate handling and Merkle-verified settlement records behind it.
Three ways in that HiBob doesn't have an equivalent for. HiBob's integration story assumes a human configuring a connector in a marketplace, or an employee opening the web or mobile app. Zipwire has three additional operating surfaces built for how contractors and technical teams actually work, covered in detail below.
Three ways in: CLI, WhatsApp, and MCP for Claude
None of these three has a HiBob equivalent, and none of them are gimmicks bolted on for a demo—they're all backed by the same underlying assignment/timesheet/collection engine as the web app, just exposed differently depending on who's using it.
A real CLI, for the technical contractors who'd rather script it. Zipwire ships a command-line tool (see Why the Zipwire CLI is a Big Deal) aimed at developers and technical contractors who don't want to open a browser to log time. It authenticates via its own CLI token exchange (separate from the web session), and from there a contractor can submit journal entries, check on a timesheet's status, or pull assignment details straight from a terminal or a shell script—the same operations available in the web UI, without the web UI. For an agency placing technical contractors, this is the difference between "please remember to fill in the web form" and "it's already part of their weekly script."
A WhatsApp bot that's a full operating channel, not a notification bot. A lot of platforms bolt WhatsApp on for reminders. Zipwire's WhatsApp integration is a genuine second front door: a contractor can sign up over WhatsApp from a cold start (send "Hello", say who they are and what they're doing, and the bot takes it from there), authenticate an existing account by sending a connect code, describe their week in plain English and have it parsed straight into journal entries ("Tuesday and Wednesday on the Acme project, half day Friday"), and respond to a document request by just sending a photo—which gets run through the same Machine Vision and OCR pipeline as a web upload, no app install required on either end. Approvers can approve or reject a timesheet the same way. For a contractor workforce where not everyone wants another company app on their phone, this matters more than it sounds like it should.
An MCP server, so Claude Desktop or ChatGPT Work isn't limited to reading a dashboard. Zipwire's MCP server exposes roughly 19 distinct tool surfaces—journal, timesheets, assignments, invoicing, collections, dashboard, clients, and more—each auto-generated from the same underlying API actions and annotated with safety hints (read-only, destructive, idempotent) so an agent knows what it's doing before it does it. Connect it to Claude Desktop and it can pull up a Right to Rent collection's Yoti ID-check results alongside a tenant's claimed identity and flag a mismatch a human reviewer might miss, or draft a timesheet from a plain-English description and hand it back for approval. The same MCP server works with ChatGPT Work's connector support too—the protocol is client-agnostic by design, so it isn't a Claude-only integration. HiBob's API is built for human-configured, point-and-click connectors; Zipwire's MCP surface is built for an AI agent to act on your behalf directly, as a genuine tool call with a typed response, not a scraped screen.
It runs the agency's side too, not just the contractor's. Everything above reads like a contractor-facing convenience, but a requestor - the agency or company doing the hiring - can run almost the whole operation from the same two surfaces. Creating a new collection, drafting a short contract or NDA as plain text right inside the conversation, attaching it to a request, and sending it off for signature all work from WhatsApp or Claude, with no document editor and no PDF export, because the signature is built over the words themselves rather than a rendered file. We tested exactly this: Claude, talking to Zipwire over MCP from inside a WhatsApp conversation, drafted a sample agreement, attached it to a request, and correctly ran into (and respected) Zipwire's own rule that the requestor must sign first before a collection can even be sent. Signing itself still needs a human answer to a comprehension question pulled from the document's actual text - Claude can draft the contract and relay the question, but it's explicitly barred from answering on the human's behalf, which is the whole point of asking a question instead of accepting a click. The quality-of-life layer
None of what follows is a compliance requirement, but it's the difference between contractors submitting things promptly and contractors putting them off. A journal entry can be typed in plain English - "Tuesday and Wednesday on the Acme project, half day Friday" - or sent as a voice note over WhatsApp, and it parses straight into structured entries; the timesheet itself is then autofilled from that journal data rather than typed out twice. Documents follow the same pattern: upload a passport once and it's suggested automatically the next time it's needed, a whole folder can be bulk-uploaded and Machine Vision sorts out what matches what, and a wallet-held attestation - once claimed - is reusable elsewhere without repeating the check. None of it needs a password: sign-in is passkeys, wallet connect, or a one-time link, with WhatsApp itself standing in as an alternative front door for anyone who'd rather not create an account at all. On the money side, mixed currencies with exchange-rate handling and native sync into FreeAgent, Xero, QuickBooks, and Zoho mean nobody's retyping an invoice into a second system. HiBob has clearly put real effort into its own UX, but that effort is spent making the permanent-employee lifecycle pleasant; Zipwire's equivalent polish is aimed squarely at the specific friction points of running contractors - getting time logged, documents collected, and invoices paid without anyone treating it as homework.
You own your data - and we mean that literally, not just in the GDPR sense
Every SaaS vendor says you own your data. Usually what that means in practice is: you can request an export, in whatever format the vendor decided to support, and hope it's still readable if the vendor ever goes away. Zipwire means something stronger by it, and it's worth naming explicitly, because it's the same idea running underneath almost everything above - Signable Documents, Verifiable Timesheets, and wallet-held attestations are one architectural decision applied three times.
A Zipwire proof - a signed document, a timesheet, an age or AML attestation - is a self-contained file, cryptographically bound to a Merkle root that's attested independently on a public blockchain. That means the data isn't just yours in a legal or contractual sense; it's verifiable by anyone, using nothing but the file itself, without Zipwire's API, Zipwire's database, or Zipwire the company needing to still be operating for the proof to hold up. HiBob, like almost every HCM platform on the market, is the opposite model by default: your performance reviews, your compensation history, your onboarding documents live inside HiBob's systems, reachable through HiBob's export tooling, on HiBob's terms, for as long as HiBob exists and you remain a paying customer. Access to that account is provisioned by the employer's tenant, which is exactly why it typically ends the moment the employment does - the account was never really yours, it was on loan for the duration of the job.
A Zipwire login isn't provisioned by the agency - it belongs to the individual who created it. An engagement ending doesn't take the account with it: the same login, journal history, and any attestations claimed along the way carry straight over to the next agency, and to any others alongside it. Zipwire calls this "going plural" - it's common for a contractor to work for two or more firms through different agencies at once, tracked in a single journal, with Zipwire smart enough to route the right entries to the right timesheet for each one. That's a direct, practical consequence of the data-ownership model rather than a separate feature bolted on: because the account is the individual's, not the agency's, there's simply nothing to lose access to when one relationship ends.
That's a completely ordinary way for HiBob to build software, and it isn't a knock on HiBob specifically - it's how the entire SaaS industry works, HiBob included. It's just not how Zipwire is built, and if data portability is something you actually care about rather than something you nod along to in a sales call, it's a genuine, substantial point of difference.
Which to choose
If you're an HR team running a primarily permanent workforce and want one platform covering hiring, onboarding, performance, compensation, and payroll, HiBob is doing a job Zipwire isn't attempting. The two aren't substitutes at that scope.
If you're an agency, staffing business, or any company whose core operation is running contractors for clients—tracking assignments, collecting compliant onboarding documents, generating verifiable timesheets, and getting signatures that will still mean something in a dispute five years from now—that's Zipwire's whole reason for existing, and it's a job HiBob currently hands to a third-party integration rather than solving natively.
It's also entirely possible to need both: HiBob for your permanent staff, Zipwire for the contractor and compliance side of the business. They're not mutually exclusive, because they're not really answering the same question.
